Mass loss and dust formation around oxygen - rich evolved stars
نویسنده
چکیده
Infrared spectra of a number of evolved O-rich stars have been obtained with the Short and Long Wavelength spectrometers on board the Infrared Space Observatory. The very broad wavelength coverage (2.4–197μm) obtained by combining observations made with the two spectrometers includes practically all of the flux emitted by the sources, and allows us to determine the emission and absorption features of the dense circumstellar dust shells. Agreement between the fluxes obtained by the two instruments is generally very good; the largest discrepancies are probably due to source variability. Our sample of oxygen-rich AGB stars exhibits a wealth of spectral features due to crystalline silicates and crystalline water ice in emission and absorption. In this study a qualitative overview of all features due to crystalline silicates and water ice in these high mass loss rate objects is presented. A trend is discovered; the strength of the features is increasing with increasing mass loss rates. Moreover, crystalline silicate emission features have been detected for the first time at wavelengths where the amorphous silicates are still in absorption, implying different spatial distributions for the two materials. A spherically symmetric and an axi-symmetric geometry are proposed.

Gas and dust budget of the Large Magellanic Cloud
Recent observations from the Spitzer Space Telescope enable us to study the mid-infrared dust excess of Asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using mid-infrared spectra, together with photometric data from the SAGE programme, we establish a colour selection of carbon-rich AGB stars with intermediate and high mass-loss rates. We also established mass-loss rate ...
متن کاملOxygen - rich dust production in IC 10
Context. We report the detection of oxygen-rich circumstellar envelopes in stars of the nearby (700 kpc) starburst galaxy IC 10. The star formation history and the chemical environment of this galaxy makes it an ideal target to observe dust production by high-mass stars in a low-metallicity environment. Aims. The goal of this study is to identify oxygen-rich stars in IC 10 and to constrain thei...
متن کاملToo little radiation pressure on dust in the winds of oxygen-rich AGB stars
Aims. It is commonly assumed that the massive winds of AGB stars are dust-driven and pulsation-enhanced. However, detailed frequency-dependent dynamical models which can explain the observed magnitudes of mass loss rates and outflow velocities have been published so far only for C-stars. This letter reports on first results of similar models for oxygen-rich AGB stars. The aim is to provide a be...
متن کاملDust-enshrouded Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars in the Solar Neighbourhood
A study is made of a sample of 58 dust-enshrouded Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars (including 2 possible post AGB stars), of which 27 are carbon-rich and 31 are oxygen-rich. These objects were originally identified by Jura & Kleinmann as nearby (within about 1 kpc of the sun) AGB stars with high mass-loss rates (Ṁ > 10 M⊙yr ). Ground-based near-infrared photometry, data obtained by the IRAS ...
متن کاملDust formation and wind acceleration around the aluminum oxide–rich AGB star W Hydrae
Dust grains, formed around asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars, are accelerated by stellar radiation to drive stellar winds, which supply freshly synthesized nuclides to the Galaxy. Silicate is the dominant dust species in space, but ~40% of oxygen-rich AGB stars are thought to have comparable amounts of aluminum oxide dust. Dust formation and the wind-driving mechanism around these oxygen-rich...
